How to Choose a PG in Bhubaneswar: A 10-Point Checklist

Choosing a PG is one of the first big decisions when you move to Bhubaneswar. A good one makes the next year easy. A bad one means long commutes, poor food and constant stress. Use this checklist when you visit PGs, so you compare them fairly.
1. Location and daily commute
Start with where you need to be every day. A PG 10 minutes from your college or office saves you an hour or more daily. Check the route at the time you will actually travel, not on a quiet afternoon.
2. Safety and security
Look for CCTV cameras at entrances and common areas, a security guard or caretaker on site, and a proper entry record for visitors. Ask how they verify residents before move-in.
3. What the rent really includes
Two PGs with the same rent can cost very different amounts by the end of the month. Ask clearly whether electricity, Wi-Fi, laundry, cleaning and food are included, and whether there is any limit on electricity use in AC rooms.
- Electricity: included, or charged by meter?
- Wi-Fi: speed, and is it shared by too many people?
- Laundry and room cleaning: how often?
- Food: which meals, and veg or non-veg options?
4. Food quality
If the PG serves food, try to eat one meal there before you book. Check the kitchen, ask about the weekly menu and see whether meals are cooked fresh.
5. Room size, furniture and storage
Each person should have their own bed, study table, chair and a lockable wardrobe. Check how much space you get in 2, 3 or 4 sharing rooms. More sharing is cheaper, but only if the room is big enough.
6. Cleanliness and maintenance
Look at the bathrooms, not just the room. Ask how often rooms and common areas are cleaned, and how quickly repairs are done.
7. Wi-Fi and a place to study
If you study or work from your room, fast Wi-Fi and a quiet environment matter more than almost anything else. Ask current residents how the Wi-Fi is in the evening.
8. Clear rules and paperwork
A good PG explains the deposit, notice period and house rules before you pay. Ask for a receipt for every payment. If they can't tell you clearly, that's a warning sign.
9. How complaints are handled
Things break in every building. What matters is how fast they get fixed. Professionally managed PGs let you raise and track complaints, often in an app, so nothing gets forgotten.
10. Reviews from real residents
Read the PG's Google reviews and look at recent ones. If you can, speak to someone who lives there now.
