A one-day temple trail: Lingaraj and Bhubaneswar’s Old Town
Bhubaneswar is known as the temple city. Here is an easy day plan for first-time visitors.

Bhubaneswar has hundreds of temples, many over a thousand years old. You do not need a long list. A single well-planned day in the Old Town is plenty.
Morning: Lingaraj Temple area
Lingaraj is the best known temple in the city and is dedicated to Shiva. Non-Hindu visitors usually cannot enter the main sanctum, but there is a raised viewing platform outside. Go early, dress modestly and keep phones and bags minimal, as rules on photography and items can change.
Late morning: smaller temples nearby
Mukteshwar and Parasurameswar are small, beautifully carved temples. They are quieter, so they are good for photos and for taking your time.
Afternoon: Rajarani and a long lunch
The Rajarani Temple sits in a landscaped garden and makes a pleasant stop in the afternoon. Try a simple Odia thali for lunch with dalma and rice.
Practical tips
- Start by 8 AM to avoid heat and crowds.
- Carry water, a hat and light cotton clothes.
- Hire a cab for the day rather than switching autos.
- Older family members may prefer fewer stops; temples have many steps.
